Everyone deserves access to mental health support when they need it.
In the past 12 months, one in five Australians have experienced a mental health disorder, underlining the urgent need for accessible, local support services. Additionally, up to one in five women and one in ten men experience anxiety and/or depression during the perinatal period, making specialised support during pregnancy and early parenthood so important.
On 29 July Amanda announced the Southern Suburbs will be getting a new Medicare Mental Health Centre, co-located with a new Perinatal Mental Health Centre.
Medicare Mental Health Centres provide free, walk-in mental health support delivered by qualified mental health professionals. No referral, appointment, or Mental Health Treatment Plan is required, making these services easy to access when people need help most.
Complementing this service, the new Perinatal Mental Health Centre will provide specialised mental health care for new and expectant parents experiencing mental health challenges during pregnancy and early parenthood.
Both centres are expected to open in 2027 with final locations being determined.
