Government’s child care system fails to keep fees down

Monday, 20 January 2020

In the face of new data showing child care fees have risen 34.6 per cent since the Liberals were elected, the Minister has admitted the Government will be undertaking a review of its failed child care system.

This is a stark admission from the Minister that the Morrison Government’s child care system has failed, only 18 months after the Government introduced its “once in a generation” reform of the system.

Unfortunately families can expect very little from this review – the Government is all spin and no substance when it comes to providing families with relief from rising child care fees.

This is the Government that promised families its new system would put downward pressure on child care costs, when in reality fees have continued to soar.

Despite the spin from the Minister, rising out of pocket child care costs are crippling family budgets. With fees climbing over 5 per cent in 12 months, and CPI only rising 1.7 per cent in the same period, the child care subsidy is not keeping up with soaring fees and it is families who are making up the shortfall.

The Government has also broken its promise to take strong action and “name and shame” child care providers who raise fees by an exorbitant amount.

The Minister is all talk and no action when it comes to providing much-needed relief for families from skyrocketing child care costs.

The Morrison Government’s child care system has failed to deliver promised fee relief, and families need strong, urgent action from this Government – not an empty review.
